The A’s have sold infielder Kevin Melillo’s contract to the Jays for cash. It appears that the Blue Jays love getting scraps from the A’s kitchen table. Melillo was designated for assignment last week by the A’s. The 26-year old lefty swinging infielder has played in 39 games in AAA ball this season and he was 38 for 147 (.259 avg, .768 OPS) with 21 runs scored, 5 homers and 17 RBIs. He only played in 1 game with the A’s in his career and he only batted one time and earned a walk. The A’s won’t miss Melillo much.

The A’s have called up some reinforcements from AAA with the injuries to the Sweeney boys and Joey Devine. The A’s have recalled outfielder Carlos Gonzalez from AAA. He has played in 3 games for the A’s now and he is 4 for 11 (.364 avg, 1.091 OPS) with 2 runs scored and 2 RBIs. All four of Gonzalez’ hits in the majors this season have been doubles. The 22-year old lefty swinging Gonzalez was one of the key players in the Dan Haren trade with the Diamondbacks. He played in 41 games in AAA this season and he was 46 for 157 (.293 avg, .790 OPS) with 23 runs scored, 4 homers and 25 RBIs. The A’s have also recalled outfielder Travis Buck. Buck got off to a slow start for the A’s before he was placed on the D.L. Buck has played in 18 games for the A’s this season and he is 13 for 77 (.169 avg, .526 OPS) with 7 runs scored, 1 homer and 9 RBIs. He needs to make more contact if he wants to stay in the majors this time as he has already whiffed 23 times this season. 28-year old righty reliever Brad Ziegler has also been called up to replace Devine in the bullpen. He pitched in 1 game for the A’s so far this season working 1/3 of an inning allowing 1 hit and no runs. Ziegler has pitched in 19 games (0 starts) in AAA this season and he was 2-0 with 8 saves, a 0.37 ERA and a 0.78 WHIP.

The Oakland A’s place three players on the D.L.

The Oakland A’s have placed DH/1B Mike Sweeney, OF Ryan Sweeney and relief pitcher Joey Devine on the D.L. Mike Sweeney has a case of left knee inflammation. He has played in 40 games for the A’s this season and he is 35 for 120 (.292 avg, .738 OPS) with 13 runs scored, 2 homers and 12 RBIs. Ryan Sweeney has also played well this season but he has been DL’d with a left toe contusion. He has played in 46 games for the A’s this season and he is 36 for 123 (.293 avg, .760 OPS) with 15 runs scored, 2 homers, 22 RBIs and 3 stolen bases. Righty reliever Joey Devine was placed on the D.L. with right elbow inflammation. That is a shame as Devine was lights out so far this season for the A’s. He has pitched in 18 games (0 starts) for the A’s and he is 3-0 with a 1.23 ERA and a 1.05 ERA. He also has whiffed 28 batters in only 22 innings. The A’s need all of these guys back as they were all producing.

UPDATE: Mike Sweeney will now miss 4-6 weeks as he underwent surgery to both of his knees.

The Oakland A’s designate Lenny DiNardo for assignment

Blogged under General, Front Page, Bloglockers, Arrivals & Departures by chinmusic on Monday 2 June 2008 at 9:00 pm

The A’s have designated lefty Lenny DiNardo for assignment because of his awful pitching this season. He pitched in 5 games (2 starts) for the A’s this season and he was 1-1 with a 10.24 ERA and a 2.28 WHIP. Some team will likely claim DiNardo off waivers as lefty pitchers are hard to find and he did pitch well last season for the A’s.
