The Oakland A’s place Joey Devine on the 15-day disabled list

The A’s have placed 28-year old righty reliever Joey Devine on the 15-day disabled list due to right biceps soreness. Devine pitched in 26 games (0 starts) for the A’s last year and he was 1-1 with a 3.52 ERA and a 1.26 WHIP. He has now pitched in 68 games (0 starts) in his career with the A’s and he is 7-2 with a 1.57 ERA and a 0.98 WHIP. Devine has missed two of his four years with the A’s due to injury, so I’m not surprised that they have shut him down for a while.

UPDATE: (4/11/2012) - Joey Devine will miss the entire 2012 season as he needs the second Tommy John Surgery of his career.

The A’s have lost 27-year old righty swinging 3B Scott Sizemore for the 2012 season due to a torn left ACL. Sizemore played in 93 games for the A’s last year and he was 76 for 305 (.249 avg, .778 OPS) with 42 runs scored, 11 homers, 52 RBIs and 4 stolen bases. Sizemore has now played in 158 games in his first two years in the majors and he is 122 of 511 (.239 avg, .711 OPS) with 69 runs scored, 14 homers, 70 RBIs and 5 stolen bases. This is a big blow to the A’s as Sizemore was going to be the starting 3B in 2012. Now the position is wide open.

Well at least we know that Wuertz won’t be traded until August (at the earliest) with the trade deadline tomorrow. The A’s have called up 27-year old lefty reliever Jerry Blevins to replace Wuertz in the bullpen. Blevins has pitched in 16 games (0 starts) for the A’s so far this year and he is 0-0 with a 3.86 ERA and a 1.78 WHIP.

Brett Anderson undergoes Tommy John Surgery for the Oakland A’s

23-year old lefty starting pitcher Brett Anderson has underwent Tommy John Surgery. He will miss the rest of the 2011 season and most if not all of the 2012 season. Anderson pitched in 13 games (all starts) for the A’s this year and he was 3-6 with a 4.00 ERA and a 1.33 WHIP. Anderson has pitched in 62 games (all starts) in his first three years with the A’s and he is 21-23 with a 3.66 ERA and a 1.27 WHIP. This is a big blow to the A’s as Anderson is one of the best starting pitchers they have.
