He’s also playing very solid defense for the A’s in CF. It’s no surprise that the A’s are hanging in there in the A.L. West as Crisp is a big reason for that.

The last time the A’s were truly relevant was back when they had Tim Hudson, Mark Mulder and Barry Zito heading the starting rotation. While all of those guys were great pitchers they didn’t have arms like Trevor Cahill, Gio Gonzalez and Brett Anderson. Look out for the A’s in the next few years if their new “Big Three” continue to improve. 22-year old righty Trevor Cahill started this season in the minors but that didn’t matter as he made the All-Star Team. Cahill has started 23 games for the A’s this year and he is 14-5 with a 2.43 ERA and a 1.00 WHIP. He has only given up 110 hits in 155 2/3 innings so far this season as he has been flat out incredible. 24-year old Gio Gonzalez bounced around in trades for quite a while because a lot of teams fell in love with his upside. This is the season that it’s all starting to come together for the A’s. Gonzalez has started 26 games for the A’s this year and he is 11-8 with a 3.24 ERA and a 1.27 WHIP. He has only given up 134 hits while whiffing 134 batters this season in 161 innings pitched which shows what kind of stuff he has. He still needs to tighten up his control a tad as he has walked 71 batters this year but that’s nitpicking. 22-year old Brett Anderson has the potential to be the A’s ace if he can just stay healthy. Anderson has started 11 games for the A’s this year and he is 3-4 with a 2.86 ERA and a 1.13 WHIP. He has whiffed 47 batters in 63 innings this season while only walking 10 batters as he has been flat out nasty for the A’s this year. Look out for this team in the very near future if they ever find any hitting.

Conor Jackson was activated off the D.L. to take his place. Carter was clearly overmatched by making league pitching in his brief stay with the A’s. He played in 6 games for the A’s and he was 0 for 19 (.000 avg, .050 OPS) with 1 walk and 9 whiffs. The A’s might give Carter another chance when rosters expand on September 1st if he plays well in the minors the next couple of weeks.

The A’s have recalled 23-year old righty swinging 1B/OF Chris Carter to replace him on the active roster. Carter was the A’s #1 prospect coming into this season according to Baseball America. Carter made his major league debut for the A’s last night and he was 0 for 3 with 2 whiffs. Carter played in 113 games in AAA-ball this year and he was 111 of 424 (.262 avg, .898 OPS) with 84 runs scored, 27 homers and 89 RBIs. He has now played in 661 games in his six years in the minors and he is 704 of 2,471 (.285 avg, .921 OPS) with 458 runs scored, 145 homers, 502 RBIs and 27 stolen bases. The A’s really hope that Carter is ready for the show because they need his power.
